There are several theories regarding this interesting and important question. Here are some of my favorites:
1. It's just easier to be stupid. 2. Organized religion. 3. Instant gratification is more important than long-term goals. 4. Lead paint. 5. Alcohol and drugs. 6. With 6.5 billion to work with, you're gonna get several hundred mill. just from the expected random nature of the universe. 7. Organized religion. 8. Reproduction happens at a greater rate in uneducated populations. 9. If the only mental stimulation you got all day was watchin "All My Children" and Fox news.... 10. We fear the unknown and are destined to repeat it. 11. Organized religion.
Perhaps I'll add some more thoughts later, gotta catch Bill O'Reilly.

Because the average IQ for a human being is 100. This puts them at about the level of a smart golden retriever. That doesn't mean that they are as nice as a golden retriever however...
