Rats are the best! They are very social so get 2-3. Males tend to fight and are lazy and females are more active. Get a as big of a cage as possible. Hampster cages are way too small.
Rats are affectionate and do not bite. They have really bad eyesight and sometimes will accidently bite your finger if they think it is food --but never on purpose. Check out some rat sites and see why it is the number one pocket pet.

Get two rats. They are social creatures and need another rat friend to hang out with. Make sure they are the SAME gender.
Get the largest cage you can manage. Most of the cages they sell at the pet store are the equivalent of a human spending a lifetime locked in a bathroom.
The food most pet stores sell are junk. See if you can find lab blocks for rats online, or seach for info about the Suebee's diet.

getting more than one at a time is the best. they also escape alot, so lock the cage.
