Defence should be responsible..
defence move forward unnesasaryly some time and the result is off side-that is unfair.
what the hell is unfair of been OFF SIDE because both teams are having 11players on field..
now its time to add this old rule of OFF-SIDE to history. and surely game will be more exciting

lol wtf? that made no sense at all. offsides prevents an unfair advantage of keeper vs. striker. and "defence move forward unnesasaryly some time and the result is off side-that is unfair." thats called an offside trap, they do it to get an offsides call and regain possesion of the ball. If by "more exciting" you mean the score will be 35-28, then go watch hockey. and dont post on something that should be changed when you have no idea what it is for in the first place. . . For everyone who is posting that offsides traps should not be offsides, quiet yourselves please. Do you not like strategic soccer? why dont we just make the goals 50 feet wide and take away the keepers? and anyone who gets slide tackled and pretends to be more hurt than they are should get a red card? lol why dont we just kill soccer where it stands? because offsides makes it more interesting. so leave it. . . please

Of course it would be fair no matter what the rule is as long as it is the same for both teams, it is fair. The question is, would it be as fun play and to watch.

I think if you get rid of the off-sides rule, you might also have to add a rule like "icing" in hockey so that it wouldn't always be just kicking the ball to the other end with little incentive to "bring the ball forward".

I think the goals should be wider also. There would be more scoring and more choices the goalie and defence would have to make.

In order to understand the "Off Side" discussion, you must first view soccer from an American point of view.

Americans view a sport as "exciting", if there are lots of goal, points, or runs.

How about this for a compromise:

Drop the off side rule for soccer games played in American Leagues. Scores would multiply, as would American fan support, sponsor dollars and TV ratings.
Basketball has no off side rule, but if you "Cheat" (Leave the defensive end too soon) the other team can score first.

As for games outside the USA; Keep the off side rule as it's always been played. The world loves soccer with the rule, they don't care about USA opinions.

The onside kick is a very risky move. Yes the kicking team could possibly recover the ball. But the receiving team do have their own players rushing and ready for such scenario. In many cases the ball still ends up with the receiving team so the kicking team not only loses the ball, they also will lose a lot of yards and the opponents will be all over their territory ready to score touchdown.

Philly Heat, do you really think the world loves the offside trap? Please.

Easy solution is to make a rule similar to hockey's: Draw a line halfway between the center line and the top of the retaining area. As long as the ball crosses that line first, there is no offsides.

Off Side rule is used to prevent attcking players hanging around close to goal for long periods to gain unfair advantage because they're unmarked when their opponents are moving forward.
If there was no Off Side rule I feel that games will be less attractive as teams will be reluctant to move forward for fear of leaving opponents unmarked if they lose the ball.

u cant get rid of the off side rule. most of the time some of the players will get cocky go way up to the goal hav a teammate pass to them and there's a free goal. the off side rule is for the best. deal with it.

If you want more goals...eliminate the off sides rule, widen the goal from 24 feet to to 36 feet and increase the hieght from 8 feet to 12 feet....then watch the game fall apart....it would no longer be soccer.

If you like strategy, timing, insight, reading the defense/offense, creativity....leave it alone and enjoy the excitement!!! Now that is soccer!!!!

You can't totally eliminate it, we need responsible and fair play. However, where players deliberately move forward to gain a technical offside against the opponent, it should not be ruled offside.
