Natural selection keeps it very close to 50/50. However, there are times (like after world war 2) when the balance gets off a bit. I understand that currently in China it is out of whack (too many males because of a cultural bias for male children), and there are going to be problems as there aren't enough chinese women to go around for the coming generation.
