You can't just diet, you need to make permanent changes and you have to do it for more than your weight. The health consequences of a bad diet go way beyond just gaining weight and it's killing people.
Start an eating plan that you can like and live with. Personally, I like ediet.com because they offer a great choice, are cheap, help you put together your meal plans, and can be done privately from any computer you have access to.
Then find some exercise you like. I like the gym, you may or may not find that's your thing. You can walk, hike, bike, swim, whatever you enjoy. You can mix it up.
Strength training would allow you to firm it up, burn some calories and gain upper body strength to compliment what you get from being on your feet all day.
As part of your eating plan, you can always opt to make changes gradually.
First on tap - cut out soda and all sugared drinks. Even diet soda is bad for you.
Drink enough water. You need a minimum of 2 quarts a day. It's best to avoid the sweetened fruit stuff, but that still beats soda.
Next - add more vegetables to your diet. I never met a salad eater or someone who eats a lot of veges with a weight problem.
Reduce your bread, pasta, rice and potatoes. Note I didn't say get rid of them (though you can). I'm suggesting that you can't stick with a diet missing all your favorite foods, but you do need to eat these things in small quantities.
One thing I do is to only eat "bad" foods (defined as anything not on Atkins for me) when they are worth it. "Worth it" means...either its a special occasion - I don't skip the birthday cake, or its something really high quality like good restaurant food.
I do skip the fast food and other junk that really doesn't taste all that good anyway.
Hope that helps.

Congratulations on your desire to start a program. There are 2 programs that are very good. The 1st is Weight Watcher's, the 2nd is Michael Thurman. The latter is excellent. With this, you will drop 50lbs in 3 months or less. Good Luck!!

i am 5'11 and large chested. just be sure to pick activities where you are not bouncing around too much like high impact aerobics. it's very uncomfortable for someone of our height and you feel ridiculous. trust me, i know. everyone always looks at me like i should be standing in the corner. height when it comes to fitness is NOT an advantage. it makes you uncoordinated and you stand out like a sort thumb. sorry to be the bearer of bad news. but i've been living this crap for 31 long years.

You know I wish I had your problem. I weigh much more than you do and I am 5'10" also. So what I am saying is that, if all you have to lose is about 50lbs, go for it and stick to it and good luck with it because I have a longer way to go
