that could be but there are other that they choose to. jesus isolated himself came back as a diffrent man

they might find that they no longer want anything to do with socity may have had traumer or just want out
some find spirit some bitter as many reasons to do as to not

There are a variety of reasons that people isolate-sometimes it is because they feel shy and insecure and are afraid of people and do not handle rejection/judgement/disapproval, etc. well-and unfortunately the world offers too much of those things.
Another reason could be that they just find most people to be annoying, instead of loving and choose not to be exposed to negative energies.
Another reason is they have a highly sensitive/artistic temperment and choose to spend their time in lone creative activities such as painting, writing, etc.
Then there are those who are spirtual and are more at home in a monk-like existence.
Bottomline-different strokes for different folks-just like some people are external party animals, while others like to putter around their homes and still others are wanderers or hermits, etc.

perhaps they would say that they have not seperated themselves, but rather society has forced them away.

because if they didn't isolate themselves they wouldn't be able to be called hermits! Duh!!
