I am a Chinese working as a teacher in a middle school. I have to work for 13 hours a day at school. The pay I get is about 240 $ US. It is not easy to find a job in China now. What may come into your mind if you have to work as a teacher for 13 hours a day?

I would be thankful that I had a job that allowed me the opportunity to touch the lives of a number of young people. If you inspire only one child to great achievements, you are an awesome success in life!

I teach elementary school, and while I don't have but about 7 hours a day with my kids, I would certainly say I work far more than that just to prepare for the days ahead. As tired as 7 hours with kids can be, I often wish the day was actually longer, we are required to cram SO much into their minds and not enough time or funding to do it properly (thank "No child left behind" for that)
As far as the pay, we don't make that much a day, at least not after taxes, however, having all the holidays is a bonus no other job offers (aside from the spontaneous hugs and "your the best teacher ever" notes which are priceless).

It depends on if you love teaching, because you would not ask this question if you love doing what you do. I had a teacher that was teaching for 25 years and finaly one day woke up and asked her self why am I still here in high school as a teacher. "I wake up wanting to do something else with my life". She is now a writer, something that she has wanted to do all her life. You just need to ask your self if you want to wake up every day for the next 25 years to teaching.
Thirteen hours of working at any job will cause stress for anyone. Keep your options open while at your job, maybe you might want to look at others, see if there are better paying and more oportunic jobs out there for you. With the difficulty in finding jobs now adays where I live also it's difficult. But the ones that get ahead in the work force are the ones that put 110% in finding a different job.

As a teacher you touch lives, never forget that!

Do you mean you spend 13 hours a day with the students? Or 13 hours total, including meetings and planning? I think a lot of teachers can spend that much on occasion.

I agree with one of the answerers that we need more time to get everything in for NCLB but 13 hours with kids would be more than any previously sane person could take.

If China values education so much, why don't they employ more teachers? Are your class sizes so large, they don't need many? I've heard that your students are well disciplined. If so, I might be willing to spend 13 hours with them!

I did what you did for years. And, I almost had a nervous breakdown. I started taking antidepressants and my own family was not getting what they needed from me in terms of my mothering abilities. I have since downsized. Learned to let others do the work. Learned that students who teach often learn more because they have to know the subject and have become a more project driven teacher. I am told now that I am a wise person. I have friends who know me well tell me I am one of the best last minute lesson planners they know. Of course, the internet helps alot and helping others helps out a lot too. It's totally Karma. Don't the chinese believe in that as well?

Insanity,madness and disappointment.
You teachers get underpaid(what someone else said also), but you allso need to teach more efficiently. if the school boards where easier to work with and would allow the majority of desicions be made by teachers(not some fool who cares more about cutting important programs),then maybe that would be possible. If your a good teacher, I'd remember you and surley others would to, for years to come.
Cheers!

In my opinion, teachers are grossly underpaid. The things they have to deal with everyday I'm sure would make and inmate shudder. You've got guts but I can't imagine being a teacher especially for 13 hours a day.

Students are our future.you can be the one person to make a difference in there life. Many love knowledge they want to learn all they can about anything. In the future ,if you are good, a student will come back and tell you some thing you said stuck with them all there life, or that you was the only person that cared if the succeeded. To be the one that shapes the mind and heart of an innocent life is beautiful.

Why are you working 6 hours after the kids go home? That sounds like a lot.
