My daughter who is 13 has slight acne on her cheeks, is a bit overweight...not fat, just big, thinning hair on the top of her head...where the middle part is, and she has excess hair, especially thick black hair around her neck...not all the way around, but a patch on each side where her lymph nodes are. she uses nair to get it off, but is there something i should be concerned about? I'm reading all kinds of things, and i don't really know what it boils down to...she even seems to have symptoms of cushings disease. any help would be appreciated!

thank you so far for your answers...and just for the record...i am not only concerned with her appearance. first of all, how would you feel at 13 and looking like this?
second, i'm not diagnosing her with YOUR answers, or MY assumptions. I want to be able to cover ALL bases when i take her to the doc! sometimes they don't know what's going on & diagnose incorrectly. i would know. just getting some extra homework done for when i do take her in.

YOUR COMMENT WAS COMPLETELY UNCALLED FOR. THERE'S ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO BE DOWN RIGHT RUDE! HOW DARE YOU INSINUATE THAT I NEGLECT MY DAUGHTER. YOU'VE GOT SOME NERVE LADY. YOU ASK ABOUT HUGE BLOOD CLOTS TO TOTAL STRANGERS, SO DON'T SIT HERE & TRY TO DISGRACE ME!
for the other's reading, just take a look at her answer. totally rude. and please look at my added comment above this one. NOT LOOKING FOR A DIAGNOSIS AS I STATED ABOVE!!! Just friendly advise that I can bring up when I take her in!

I was diagnosed with PCOS at 16 but was told that it should have been diagnosed earlier. the best bet is to keep a journal of all her symptoms and give it to her Dr. there is a simple blood test that can be done before the ultrasound to see if her levels are up. i have to tell you as a grown woman i have a hard time having the trans vaginal ultrasound i can imagine how hard it would be for a young lady of 13. i hope you find the answers you need life is hard enough on teens these days with out having to face an illness that you cant figure out

It is possible to have POS. I was recently diagnosed with POS and I've suffered from symptoms since day one. It has taken several different docs and 14 years later to finally get a diagnosis. My doc did say to beware of the information out on the internet on POS because it can be misleading. I would speak with you gyno about the possibility of having this condition. There are several approaches that you can take, and they will go over this, if in fact you do have POS. One is an oral contraceptive. The only thing that's going to get you regulated is hormones. So, if you're already going that route, no need for anything else. If you're not, talk to your doc and see what they say. Second alternative (I don't recommend this if you havn't had children, as the procedure can be painful for a few days to several weeks) is the Mirena IUD. The IUD is inserted by your doc in the office, they do an ultrasound to make sure it's in place, and VOILA! you're protected from getting pregnant for 5 years! Great thing about this is, once the doc takes it out you're ready to get preggers that same day! With POS it makes it pretty difficult to concieve, however, I ended up with an (oops!) baby with out drugs, and carried her full term, so it's not impossible, but you're too young to have to worry about that right now. The downside to this is (as I'm experiencing right now) you may have a constant menses. I am currently taking synthetic estrogen to stop the bleeding. Hopefully this works, if not, we're going to have to take it out. The third option is to take a diabetes medication, however, I would use this as last resort, as this makes you VERY VERY fertile! Great if you're trying to conceive, bad if you're not! Anyway, I hope this info helps, and consult with your doc and your parent(s).

The best thing is to take her into the doctor and get a professional opinion. Losing hair at 13 years of age is not a good sign. Has she had a thyroid test lately? If she has an underactive thyroid it can cause acne, hair loss, and weight gain. It could be just about anything, but something is definitely going on and I suggest you make an appointment with your family doctor soon, that is the only way to know for sure.

It probably is not Cushing's, which is caused by prolonged excess cortisol in the body. Since it is caused by prolonged exposure, it is probably not the case with a 13 year old. However, it does sound like it could be a disorder of the endocrine system. I'd take her for a physical with the doc and tell him what's up.

I recommend that you just take her to the doctors. I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and that isn't it. It has to do with missed periods and the chance of getting sists on your overuries. Saying that she should still go to a doctor and talk to them and see what is going on.

It sounds like PCOS. And yes your 13 year old can have it. Take her to the doc and tell them everything so they can run the tests.
IF YOU READ ABOUT PCOS IT WILL TELL YOU THAT U WILL HAVE HAIR UNDER YOUR NECK..ACNE...POSSB. OVER WEIGHT...U HAVE MALE HORMONES. GO TO THE DOC. THEY WILL DO TRANS VAGINAL SCAN AND BLOOD WORK. IF SHE HAS IT THEN THEY WILL DO A CORRELATION WITH PHYSICAL EXAMINATION. YES IT IS FOLLICLES ON YOUR OVARIES. AND YES IT IS HARD TO BECOME PREGNANT. THEY WILL START WITH BIRTH CONTROL PILLS TO SEE IF THEY CAN CONTROL THE FOLLICLES. IF THEY CAN'T THEN THEY TALK ABOUT SURGERY. AND YES SOMETIMES YOU CAN GET CANCER. THIS IS WHAT IS CAUSING MY SISTER'S CANCER.

Take her to the doctor, and get her checked out, it might just be a thyroid problem, if it is they can give her medication to clear it up, but seriously, she really needs a doctors diagnosis, so the sooner the better
