Aside from the obvious minority macroracial groups of africans, hispanics, native north americans, and asians, the people of the United States are, for the most part, a racial mixture between people of all of the different countries of Europe. The very earliest immigrants were english. Later came the scottish, dutch, french, german, and scandinavian. All of such early immigrants were relatively well-to-do. Later came people that were more poor, who wanted to get out of their home country. Such poor second-wave immigrants were mostly irish, italian, russian, polish, and other slavic. Since then, the various european peoples interbred, creating 'european mutts', which constitute most white americans.

Well, with inter-racial marriages come multi-racial children. American children now adays are more multi-cultural due to the fact their parents come from different cultural backgrounds but not necessarily multi-racial.
Take, my husband and children for example (I'm Mexican). My husband's father was a full-blooded German and married a Hispanic-American woman. This, makes my hubby multi-cultural but not multi-racial. The "white" race still encompasses Hispanics. (If you don't believe me look it up!) Therefore my children are also multi-cultural but not necessarily bi-racial. However, I do have some Hispanic friends who've married African-Americans. Their children are bi-racial. It's becoming more and more common. America is a wonderful country and can only get better when things like this happen.

Well, there are North Americans, consisting of Canadians and citizens of the United States of America, and there are Central Americans--like Hondurans, etc.--and there are South Americans, (i.e. Brazilians, etc.). So to have the answer to whether Americans are one race or mixed races, one would have to be more specific with one's question. Wouldn't one? : }
