The South is the best part of the country! Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida (well, geographically speaking,) South Carolina, and North Carolina. I don't believe you can classify Kentucky (I live here), Missouri, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, or Delaware Southern in any way.

I love the food, great people, hospitality, weather, climate, economy (yes, it's growing,) educational opportunities (yes, they are aplenty,) culture, history, towns, and so on. I love the beaches of Alabama, the lush rolling hills of Mississippi, the untamed beauty of east Tennessee, the wildflower meadows of Texas, and swamps of Louisiana. I love the atmosphere of Memphis, cosmopolitan feel of Nashville, authentic cultures of Austin and San Antonio, cowtown feel of Fort Worth, and the piney woods of Texas and Arkansas.

How do you feel about the South? I think it's great. Please, to Yankees: No comments about how barefoot hicks.

Kentucky, culturally is not Southern; it's more like the upper midwest/Great Lakes states. Having said that, our accents resemble those of the South more than the north (with the exception of Louisville, they ain't nothin' but a bunch of da*n yankees.) It is as beautiful as the Southern states, though, to be honest.

None of those places are very south at all.

Go to Chile, or New Zealand, or Antarctica.

There are a lot of really nice areas in the south and I probably would live in one of them if it weren't for the redneck and/or racist mentality of so many southern whites... I lived in Tulsa for one full year as Director of Hospital Services for the Oklahoma Region of the Red Cross, serving 59 hospital across the state- I visited each of them more than once. The local people wouldn't warm up if it were 110 degrees outside (which it often was!)... because I'm "a Yankee". I didn't even have the color barrier to deal with- I'm as white as a Saltine cracker!

I've been stationed in Texas and Alabama while in the military... same deal. I've camped throughout southern Illinois, Missouri and Arkansas... same deal, saw the sights, fished and moved on. Been to southern Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and S. Carolina... same deal.

I hate our winters, but I do believe I'll stay north just the same... just as most any southerner will keep his hat hangin' in the south, only it's not due to MY view of an imaginary division between the states; I won't live where I'm viewed as an 'outsider' within my own country, thank you just the same.

I totally agree with you! I'm from South Carolina and have traveled all over the country! The south is the best part of the country! The food is the best (esp. seafood, southern food and Cajun food.) The cites are the best, New Orleans, Charleston, Savannah, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Orlando, Miami, Daytona, the Keys and so on! And everyone looks better b/c they are more active and in the sun more. Everyone loves to vacation in the south! And its just a more easy going, uplifting, place! Lets not forgot the Southern Hospitality!

Well, sugaaaaa; you pretty much try to insure that those nasty ole yankees would get their backs up. Lawdy, Missy, don y'all know that they ain't hardly any true southern folk left. Wouldn't be surprised if your pedigree has a little bit of Boston beans in the mix.
Besides, if you were a true daughter of the old south, you'd know that Texas is cow country, they sneer at mint juleps! And talk about ignorant, chile, Jefferson Davis was from Virgina. You don't know your greens and cornbread from an outhouse hole.

If a real Southerner heard you going on about what is and is not a southern state, He be on you quicker than a nighty hawk on June bug!

Well, I'm originally from Kansas, lived in Oklahoma, traveled all over the south. I live in Wisconsin now, let me tell, Kansas my be considered part of the Midwest, but we have southern style, southern taste, and southern hospitality. The people are nicer and the food better in the south. I miss real BBQ, (it is all sweet and tangy here), spicy food, food with flavor, culture, and friendly hellos. As far as barefoot hicks, you have no idea, I've seen more hicks here then I ever did in Kansas or Oklahoma! I can't wait to get out of here!!!

I was born in Connecticut, lived in southern Georgia (with my mom's black male friend) until I was 7, and moved to Phoenix, Arizona. Lived there until one year ago when I moved to Virginia with my fiancee, who's mother is VERY southern. Even though I'm not that far south, I love how much nicer in general people are out here. And his mom is the sweetest thing I've ever met. So I definetly enjoy the South more than anywhere else in the U.S. (I loved Georgia while I was there (as young as I was :P)

Virginia is a southern state. Oklahoma is not a southern state.

In your list of things about the south, you forgot to mention the following:

1. Highest crime rates.
2. Highest out of wedlock births.
3. Highest divorce rates.
4. Highest teen pregnancy rates.
5. Highest poverty rates.
6. Highest federal subsidies.

Well I have been here all my life. Moved a few times and never was so happy to get back home to the people that understood me. I'm in North Carolina and I wouldn't move for anything in the world. I love the food girts and livermush, good ol' BBQ and slaw burgers. We have mountains and beaches. I love the friendly people.

I'm proud to be southern!

I think the southerners are generally easy to like if you forget about their hatred of certain minorities....but then again that hatred persists elsewhere in the USA as well. I spent a great deal of time in the south during WW2 and it was OK except for the summer heat. Wow!!! I placed my hand on the wing of a B-17G in the middle of the summer (Boca Raton, Florida) and left much of my skin behind. I loved the moss hanging from the trees.

I love the south. I like the climate and I think southern people are better mannered and more friendly. Ive lived up north and the people seem kinda strange to me.Especially in climates of long and harsh winters. I lived in Pa and people are downright scary..especially nearing the end of a long winter. People in the south seem more family oriented and having close ties to family..Its like families mean more. Also they seem more patriotic. I know these are generalizations and you find all kinds in all places..
