At your house where it is safe.

At your home (or a relative's home). Babies have absolutely no idea that it's their birthday, or that they're the "guest of honor." First birthdays are really for the parents of the child. Wasting money on a party at Chuck E. Cheese or the like would be just that...wasting money. Plus, those places are crowded, noisy and FULL of germs. The noise level alone might upset your baby.

I would suggest either having it at your house or (if you have a large guest list and not enough room) a relative's house who has more space.

Forget trying to do a theme. I've yet to meet a one year old baby who was in love with Dora or Bob the Builder. I'd still make it colorful...go to the party supply store and get colored paper plates, but skip all the specialty balloons and table cloths, etc. and buy plain. Chances are, even the toys your baby gets won't really be as interesting as the boxes and wrapping paper surrounding them. :)

If you're insisting on going somewhere (and there will be older kids there at the party) try your local county park (weather permitting) and rent a picnic shelter and have a bbq. The older kids can play on the playground and keep themselves occupied, and the out of pocket cost will be do-able.

I would recommend having your child's first birthday party at home. Many reasons but most of all it is much cleaner and a lot more safe. My daughter was covered in cake once we got to that part so straight into the bathtub she went. She also did not start walking until she was 13 months old so it was much easier to have things at home where if there was something I needed it was there, unlike the park if something happened.

This year, for her second birthday, we are having it at the park. She is running, jumping and can do a lot more things than when she was still a baby turning into a toddler.

The park can be a lot of fun but having the first birthday at home makes for a lot more memories, in my opinion.

I suggest that a baby's first birthday party be at home, in case anything happens! As the first poster suggested, a barbecue would be good. Really, the first birthday is about the parents having fun more than the kids. Birthday parties that actually involve the kids really don't occur until at least birthday #2 or even 3. I don't remember my first birthday at all and hardly remember my second. I do remember the ones that came afterwards.

We have a place that has rooms we can rent. And since i tend to invite more family than little kids to a first bday party it works out for me. It really ends up being nice i can decorate any way i want and i dont have to worry about people fitting into my tiny house. I would suggest maybe finding a place that has rooms you can rent if you are going to have a family party with not as many kids but if there are going to be any number of kids i would think about the ages of those children and base it on that. Good luck though.

I would say keep it simple a park or your house would be just fine. keep the focus on your child because at this age it is very easy for the party to go from a birthday to any other party you have. Remember your child is turning one so they will not remember this day, don't try to amaze them so much save it for older birthdays. Instead do something nice and take lots of pictures so you can share with your child when they are older.

One very good idea for a baby's first birthday is Chuck E. Cheese or if your Burger King has a play room you could have it at Burger King. Any place where their are fun and games for the children and you (the parent) do not have to clean up would be a good idea.

A 1 year old is still very small, it'd be safer at home. Plus at that age a big party is overwhelming to them... they would be more comfortable in an enviroment they know and feel safe in.

We had my daughters 1st at a park with bbq. we have a big family so it was easier to have a big space such as a park, plus you clean up at the park and go home to a clean house.
