My friend stays out in the country & has animals Deer, Goats, & horses. Her Deer got sick last night & she told me it was moaning in pain so she had her husband go outside and shoot it. She said it was 1:30 a.m. in the morning. She said she tried to wait till morning to take it to the vet but could not stand it moaning in the night. I was upset with her as I had a dog that became ill in the night 12:30 a.m. to be exact & I called the emergency vet number & they told me to bring the dog in so I did. I am wondering why she could not do that instead of shooting this poor animal. If there was nothing the vet could do they would have put the deer to sleep in a humane way. I told my friend this but she does not see things my way & said just shooting it saved money. Do you think this was wrong?

To huggy bunny17,
Yes there is a difference in having an animal put to sleep than shooting it ! Yes they both have the same end effect but when you have an animal put down, they just go to sleep,. When you shoot an animal in the head, there is blood flowing everywhere, it is not a pretty sight, not humane at all. And this was not a wild deer, put a pet deer. How can you do a beloved pet like that? This is cruel.

Some vets will not treat "wild" animals and hers probably was not the kind that do middle of the night emergencies.

Although before I had thought this through I would have responded that this wasn't wrong I now will agree that it is. Only because I become more and more convinced that animals have souls and that includes all animals, not just our dogs. I may be wrong but I don't think so. If the deer were a pet then this is all the more terrible a crime. If it were a wild deer I can see your friends point and I think that she did the right thing to end it's suffering, however I just don't think it was in the right way.

It wouldn't be right to let the animal suffer all night long. It is was moaning I'm sure it was in great pain. If your friend has had deer very long I'm sure she has some idea of their nature. It is a lot easier to find an emergency vet for your dog in the middle of the night. Also, vets for animals such as this often cost more and the cost of having them come to her house, inspect the deer, and if they had to lethally inject the deer would be MUCH higher than the costs for a dog. This does pertain to livestock more than wildlife, but I know that the USDA considers a gunshot to the head(when correctly done) to be a humane form of euthanizing an animal.

Deer are often seen as pests.
I used to volunteer at a pig farm.
When a pig was hurt or sickly, the owner used to go out with his gun, put a barrel between it's eyes and shot it.
It *WAS* cheaper. They couldn't go to the very for every single pig that was sick and hurt, now could they?
Deer are just deer. It's painful to say that (Being an animal lover), but that's the way people are. If the deer was mortally hurt, he would've died anyway. This way it was quicker and painless. He got to die at home, didn't he?
What's the difference between euthunasia and shooting it?
One is a chemical, one is a bullet. It would've had the exact same end result. At least the poor little deer ended his life with his family.

bloodless does not mean painless. The heart and lungs stop functioning. The overdose of drugs means with a high enough dose they can't move but lay waiting for death. A gunshot to the head is bloody but immediate. There is also a huge difference between a dog and large animals, especially deer...not all vets will look at deer and letting it lay in pain for hours until a vet is available is not humane either.

Is this an issue that is threatening your friendship or something? Your friend probably tried to do the best thing they could think of at the time. When people are emotionally stressed they don't always make the best decisions (hence the term "hindsight").
I agree with you that I would have handled this very differently, however; your friend obviously was upset and not indifferent as evidenced by her comment of her not being able to stand hearing it moan in pain. Now SHE is in pain and is trying to reach out for help and comfort to you. You couln't be there to help the deer, but you can be there to help your friend.

They should have called the state game warden if they had the deer legally and in many states it is illegal to own a deer. If your friend cannot provide emergency treatment for sick wildlife or ID the cause they should stick with a cat or goat. The vets will respond to pet and farm animal emergencies.

A horse is a large animal, and most horse owners and vets realize certain symptoms have little time to save the animal..therefore they really did the horse a favor doing as they did, otherwise by trying to get the horse onto a trailer and hauling it to a vet and taking it off the trailer and into a strange place the horse would have had even more ailments happening and suffered much greater.

Yes, very wrong. I also think animals are the most important part of the world. They are much smarter then us and deserve to be killing us. Have you ever thought of this?
Human kills human - Human punished
Animal kills human - Animal punished
HUMAN KILLS ANIMAL - HUMAN HAS DINNER
I've been very mad about the way we treat animals recently. I can't stand it, but most of my friends just roll their eyes, so I know how you feel. I think its stupid to shoot the deer because it was bothering her. How would you feel if you visited her grandma in the hospital and the grandma was bothering you so you turned off her life support? Anyway, that's how I feel. Agree or disagree with me, I don't care. I'm sticking with and there's nothing anyone can do.

it's the nature of farming. if it's ill that's what's done. in utah you dont think that in the middle of grazing in the middle of nowhere if a cow falls and breaks her leg and the bone is exposed.... resonably repairable... it wouldnt be humane to shoot it? or would it be better to leave it there so the wound festers and the cow dies of shock?
if you have livestock you have to be prepared for things like that. and if you cant handle this you should be more selective about the demographics when choosing your friends.
