Well, it depends on your definition of "end." Are you referring to when humans can't live here anymore? Do you mean when the planet itself is utterly disintegrated? Are you referring to a Biblical apocalypse?
To any of these conditions, no one can say. However, to the first one listed, our continued destruction of the environment continues to lead to more polluted air, ground, and water. And, while the melting of the ice caps will raise water a great deal and wipe out coastal cities and land, it certainly can't cover the entire planet. Stubborn as humans are, we'll probably find some way to survive through technology if we mess things up that badly, which would be extremely sad to have destroyed such beauty. We also might start a nuclear war that kills everything but cockroaches, but the planet itself would still be here.
Condition two, where the planet is disintegrated, could be brought about by several ways, as well. A large comet, asteroid, or meteor might smash into earth, breaking it apart and causing it to no longer technically be a planet. When the sun finally goes nova (estimated to be 5 billion years away), if it reaches this far out, which his possible, it would swallow the earth, likely blowing it to bits. Then there's always the "Hitchhiker's Guide" route, where we'll be destroyed for an intergalactic highway.
As for the Bible, only the Father knows. Not even Christ knows when it'll happen. People have been incorrectly interpreting the signs for hundreds of years, so all the tabloid doomsday people are probably just as wrong now.
In short, no one can see the future, and you're right. We don't take good care of our planet. We really should appreciate it more while we still have a planet to enjoy! Who knows, tomorrow someone might throw a nuke, so go out and enjoy earth! And just in case someone doesn't start World War III, go and take care of it, too, so that generations far into the future can look back on this time and say, "Wow, look at all they did for their children and their children's children," instead of, "How on earth could they be so selfish and uncaring?"

The world will definitely end in about 4 or 5 billion years, when the sun expands and consumes the planet.
All those other apocalyptic people are insane or easily lead. This 2012 stuff is amusing, considering that there were a lot of people who were waiting for the world to end back in the 1860's. And if you do believe the Christian bible, there will be plenty of time to predict the end if the Jewish people rebuild the temple (currently the location of a huge Islamic mosque).
As for humans, we're adaptable. We mess things up, try to fix them, might make things worse. However, there's always going to be some smart person who finds a way to make life possible and advances civilization. Then there are the other people who actually want the end to come, and not because they're suicidal, but too religious.
Of course, the end could always come if I ever do get around to taking over the world. Yes...maybe my army of insects...or robots...or zombies...but not now.
In other words, don't worry about it. You'll have plenty of time to gloat or sulk or pray or go around looting when the end finally does come. But at least you're alive now.

I think that if you look at it as a problem of how we treat the planet, there are 2 ways for the world to end: nuclear war and a long, slow deterioration of the environment which would leave the planet uninhabitable for life as we know it. I think nuclear war is unlikely. Therefore, I think we're looking at a long, depressing road into the muck. No thanks to people like the current administration who don't take environmental problems seriously.

Dude don't listen to any of these other guys, they think they know what's going on in the world and how these rich guys are abusing the poor but they really don't know squat. I devote 100% of my brain space to figuring out the End of the World, so much so that I gave up math and most of my childhood memories to make space for it all.
Read some of my best answers and some of my questions. I'm all about this dude, but I write about it so much it gets repetitive. Sometimes I like typing it all up, sometimes I don't. It's good stuff though.

till recently the answer was that the earth shall end after 5,000,000,000 yrs bcoz thats when the sun's life will end and it will expand till it eventually becomes a dwarf.
but scientists hv predicted that due to global warming the yrs shall reduce a great deal.
but the expected yrs for the Earth to survive seem to be just 2,000,000,000 yrs.
but this prediction shall vary with TIME.
