The South is the best part of the country! Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida (well, geographically speaking,) South Carolina, and North Carolina. I don't believe you can classify Kentucky (I live here), Missouri, Virginia, West Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, or Delaware Southern in any way.
I love the food, great people, hospitality, weather, climate, economy (yes, it's growing,) educational opportunities (yes, they are aplenty,) culture, history, towns, and so on. I love the beaches of Alabama, the lush rolling hills of Mississippi, the untamed beauty of east Tennessee, the wildflower meadows of Texas, and swamps of Louisiana. I love the atmosphere of Memphis, cosmopolitan feel of Nashville, authentic cultures of Austin and San Antonio, cowtown feel of Fort Worth, and the piney woods of Texas and Arkansas.
How do you feel about the South? I think it's great. Please, to Yankees: No comments about how barefoot hicks.

OK, correction: Kentucky is my home, and it's pretty. I don't necessarily like it, but it's home. While our accents are somewhat Southern, our culture resembles more of that of the Great Lakes region.
I plan to move to TEXAS once I get out of college. If not there, then Mississippi (Jackson, Southaven, or Gulf Coast,) Alabama (Birmingham or Gulf Coast,) or North Carolina.

There are things I like about it and things I don't.
I like most of the people, and the real culture there.
I don't like the "old establishment" way of thinking that
some of the higher socio-economic class seem to have.

First off, Kentucky is most definitely a southern state. As someone who was born in the north, but raised in the south, I have a unique perspective on things.
I have a great love for southern culture. When I say culture, I mean real southern culture. Not NASCAR, professional wrestling, or anything that has to do with the Civil War. I love the food, I love the people (most of them), and I love the landscape. I was raised in eastern Tennessee, and there is no doubt that it is beautiful there. Great climate, beautiful mountains and forest. The mountains in North Carolina are SO beautiful, and midland/low country South Carolina is probably my favorite place in the country! Unfortunately, I've never traveled in Alabama, Mississippi, or Texas, so I can't give you an opinion. Florida and Louisianna, however, are both EXTREMELY beautiful states.
There is a downside. The redneck stereotype unfortunately DOES exist for a reason. Many people here tend to be crude and uneducated. Some tend to be bigoted towards other races, non-Christians, and those who choose to live 'alternate lifestyles.' It is a very closed-minded society.

Coming from an a New York raised boy who now lives in TN, the south is pretty dang awesome. The food is great, people have a live and let live mentality here that just astounds. It's a bit too hot during the summer, but I'm grateful for no more blizzards, unless I'm at Dairy Queen.
My only complaint is that after all the hype about southern hospitality, we have some of the rudest people in the service industry that I've ever met. These people need to tilt their noses down to drain the bird poop out of them before they drown in it.

I am from New England States and have traveled down south
at least 5 times. The people down south are lovely. I would say
the southern people are the friendliest in the USA. The food is good and there is quite a nightlife, entertainment and very talented
artists, musicians. Things cost less there.
The Drawbacks is 1. Too Hot for me to live there year round,
and what could be good or bad depending on what is involved is
that everything is at a snails pace. No one rushes for anything.
Also, I would rather be educated here in the north.I am not in
agreement with many in southern politics.

Come to TEXAS!
I am from Texas, and well despite the humidity, the hot weather, the traffic it's a great place to live! It is much cheaper to live here than other areas of the country.
I'm from Houston, although I hate the traffic at times, and the early times night clubs close, it is a great place to be.
I love Winter here, especially since it doesn't get too cold and another thing I love about living down here is that there is such a diverse mix of cultures you will always feel welcomed!
If you love Mexican food, TX is the best place for it!
Spring time is the best of all seasons..
So yeah! the SOUTH rocks!

I've spent an entire summer in South Carolina and I really liked the climate, food, wildlife and natural beauty of the state park. But I found that the so called southern hospitality was all a bunch of crap. Any fool can say hello to a stranger but what counts is that you mean it. Give me a rude, foul mouthed New Yorker any day. At least their honest. They say whats on their mind.

Live in Atlanta and do not like the South too much. The lack of public transportation to get to the exciting places requires I drive forever just to get to the beach, the lake, and even downtown.
I enjoyed N.C. and some of Tenn, but those were only for 6-8 week stays.

I have lived in every state but five. My parents were missionaries. When I was 14 we moved to South Carolina. When I was 19 they moved to Arizona, I stayed here. I love the south. I love being a woman in the South. I can't ever see myself leaving South Carolina for any reason.
