If you know that the person is NOT American and you do not know his nationality. If you are black, do you feel offended if I refer to you as black?

What if you are describing what the person looks like to someone else?

Some people OBJECT VIOLENTLY when refered to as American (try it on Canadians). So I tend not to like to use African American unless I am SURE he/she is American.

But what if the person is NOT American? Some of the answers doe not seem to understand this...

The black guy/gal. Hey, it's politically correct. And why should black people be offended for being referred to as black? Would a white person be offended if they were referred to as white?

I try not to point people out by their color unless it is the only defining feature. I would refer to them as black, though. They refer to us as white. I have some TRULY African American friends (i.e. immigrants themselves) and they do not think it is right for "black" Americans to be called African Americans.

i am not black. i was wondering the same thing, how to refer to a black person, so i asked a black person. at this time, they like to be called african americans. she also told me she is offended, and she said she was speaking for her people, to be called black.

If you are describing them to someone else:
Height, weight, build, hair color, eye color, clothing, personality (if known),
The politcally correct description is African-American, at least that's what is says on all the forms i've filled out that ask for race.

As a Black man, I do not mind if someone refers to me as black. But I would prefer someone to refer to me as a man void of color. As for the African American label, I don't care for it at all.

Thanks for your ear.
