Read a book on beardies. They are the best reptile to own as a pet. Contrary to popular belief you dont have to have alot of time for them because they are not aggressive. Unlike iguana's that must be handled constantly to stay docile, Beardies are calm even if only handled occasionally. As for salmonella ALL reptiles carry it, but because of the dry conditions that beardies live in you are far less likely to have a problem with it as long a you use common sense and wash your hands after handling them. I own two beardies and have successfully bread them about six times with only a loss of 3 babies out of a total of about 200.

to iheartjessielee: i am quite offended...I work at one of those stores you listed, and sure, our major gross is because of dog and cat food, but truthfully, our knowledge lies with the exotics. At least at my store, thank you very much. I was the aquatic specialist last year, and moved to reptiles this year. They are more my passion than fish, but I digress.

To gopher: Beardies are excellent pets; I own one, and about to aquire another within the next few weeks. They are simple to maintaine, but the right equipment is key. Heating and lighting is a must. Proper substrate and knowing what foods it can eat. Keeping an eye out on temp and humidity is a big factor in keeping your beardie happy and healthy. Desert reps are my favorite among the throng of all herps for cleaning up after them is as simple as using a scooper as you would a cat litter box. Handling them is also key on their temper. Lots of love and care means when they are older, they won't protrude their spikes and give you a hard time when you are trying to get them out. They are lovely animals, and I keep glancing over at my sweet Ryuujin as I type this...he's laying on his log, happily looking about the room..eyeing me cuz he sees me looking at him, how cute ^__^ Best site for beardie info:

If you want to have a friendly one, you need to hand train it. Which means taking time out of your every day life to handle it. Feeding can be expensive after a while and live crickets are a noisy thing to keep around.

They are relatively easy to take care of. Not much you really need to know. Ask the guy at the petstore, they will tell you everything you need to know. Make sure you go to a real petstore though, not like petsmart or petco, those are pet food stores, not pet stores.

Don't get one younger than 3 months old - 6 months is better. I won a beardie in a raffle, and it was like 2 weeks old. It died not too long after.

I would think it would be to your advantage to know all there is to know about this dragon before purchasing it. There's lot of questions to be answered. After getting it home, if your ignorant to it's needs and putting it in jeopardy. It could die. You'd also lose quite an investment for all that you would have to put into it just to own it.........

Get a book first and read about them. Once you have everything you need (an investment of about $300) and get your dragon, the one thing I stress is handling it. They make wonderful companions.
