Most of them will, but if they won't, tell them that you're just going home to flush it. (Don't really flush it, just tell them that you are. It usually works.) You could also advertise him in the paper or a fish magazine.

Usually, Petcos will take fish for adoption. Call ahead and ask if they have any room for him, and make sure you have an accurate estimation of his size. Don't just leave him there, though. Go up to the store before you drop him off and take a look around at their fish department. Are the tanks clean? Do any of the fish look sick? Do you see any dead ones? Any pet store where you notice these things is not a good place to leave your fish. Even if he does get adopted soon, he could contract a disease and just die at someone else's house. Putting an add in the newspaper is a good idea. Just be prepared for people to want to come to your house to get a good look at him first. Ask anyone who seems interested if they have any experience with or have done any reasearch on large, aggressive cichlids, and if they don't, send them away. Honestly, though, you'd have an easier time finding homes for the other fish.
Hope this helps!

First off... you can contact your local pet store. Some pet store's will take over sized fish off your hands and either use them in a display aquarium. or will find a home for it by selling it to a customer who has a habitat large enough for it. There are also many forum's such as Craigslist were you can post an ad for free letting people in your area that you have a fish that you would like to get rid of for free. usually you will get a response from someone interested in a couple of days.

I was wondering the same thing. I have two Pacus (cousins to the pirhanna) that I've had for about a year. I bought them on sale when they were about as big as my thumb. They are now both about 9" long each. No pet store in the area will take them. Petco won't even sell them in the first place because they get so big so fast. I wish I could find somebody to take them or else I'm going to have to buy a bigger tank.

It is rather difficult to get rid of Oscars, since they grow to such enormous size. You would probably be better off advertising online or in the newspaper to find him a good home.
Edited to add: I have worked at both PetCo and PetSmart, and neither would take Oscars.. perhaps it may be different in other areas of the country.. best wishes.

Large corporate fish stores like Petco and Petsmart will not usually take the fish. You could ask the associates and sometimes they take them for themselevs.
I have heard of many small independent pet stores taking in fish either by allowing you to exchange it for something else or just taking it from you for free. You have a better chance of getting a small independent store to take it in.

Call around. Some will give you credit some will just take him off your hands.
If you get desperate then go into a petstore with him in a bucket and say you found him in the parking lot. Then buy some dog food or something.
I know... I have no morals at all... I wouldn't kill the poor fishie though.

If you've ever gone away and had someone come to take care of your fish (and liked the job they did), offer the fish to that person. They like fish, you know them, they can take care of fish. Great match! It's how I got my first fish.

Your local pond, lake or river. Oscar are from the wild and can adapt back to the wild just as easy as they adapted to captivity.
