I'd definitely say that you should strive for quality hours versus a large number of hours. A dedication to a certain cause or group looks better than 100 volunteer hours at random places. Even if it's just volunteering at a retirement home for 2 hours every Saturday, it looks better than 200 hours at twenty or thirty different locations. Showing that you care about your community should be more important than showing that you care about getting into a good colleges. Admissions counselors see right past a lack of dedication and an over-eagerness to appear "ideal." Just find something you like and stick with it. Go for your school's required 40 hours and put in more time when you feel like it. If you love what you do more hours shouldn't be a problem.

Community service hours are good if you can show a lot to them, it shows commitment. Having 15 or 35 or 65 will look like what it is, an excuse to have an extra line on your resume. On the other hand, you are already involved with extra curricular activities and have been for years, so you are good--unless you happen to find a volunteer opportunity that really speaks to you. The best way to know whether your grades are acceptable to the school of your choice is to go to their website, and look for a tab for incoming students. It should give you the average GPA and SAT scores of their last freshman class. So long as you are within range of that average, you should be okay.

You should join an extracurricular activity that does community work. That way you are getting a double bonus and can claim for two different things.

At least here in American, colleges don't care past 40.

I can't comment about countries worldwide.

But community service is always good for ya :)

you don't have to have that many hours of community service to get into a good college. colleges just want to see that you can handle schoolwork along with other activities such as, volunteering, clubs, sports teams, or jobs. as long as you're well rounded, you shouldn't have any problems. another big concern is money, and if you're going to be able to afford to go to that school.

Any community service will help, but the focus of your community service should be to help your community, not just to get into a good college.
