In the USA...Cingular hands down. Biggest network since their corporate buyout of the AT&T and SBC markets. Large selection of handsets, and nearly all of their mid-range to high-end phones are nearly fully or fully world capable.
Verizon markets well, but they're still no. 2 in coverage, their technology is outdated, and their ethics as a company need some work. Not to mention...unless you want to spend big-bucks on a CDMA/GSM merged phone, they DO NOT operate outside of US shores...period. The worldwide system of CDMA that you'll see in certain parts of Asia operate on a different Mghz. frequency so Verizon technology won't work on it.
Sprint has the same problems, as does Nextel....and a Nextel handset will drop calls to no end. Plus, overall...their coverage is pretty damned weak.
T-Mobile, while they are a great company.....if you don't live in a major metro area...good luck w/ coverage. Since they're owned by Deutsch-TeleCom, their US penetration is really on major-metro based. In smaller markets...it's not worth the hassle.
I've been with Cingular for 5 years now, and have no plans on going anywhere else anytime soon.

I would say T-Mobile because they have that 3000 minutes per month plan for $49.99. It's a great deal. Also, that is my phone company. The service is great, the customer service is the best I've ever had. And I love the company!

I have Verizon, and I like it alot. I travel all over the country and I rarely have dead zones. Ironically, the only place I can't get reception is at the cottage, but if I go 1/2 mile down the road it works just fine. I think God is giving me a private zone, I can not argue with Him over that.

I have cingular and went through Hurricane Katrina and the only service I could use was/were nextell and sprint. Cingular sucked during that storm.

I like Cingular. I have excellent coverage, hardly ever have a dropped call and the couple times I needed customer service they were right there.

verizon is good. the only thing i don't like is they don't seem to compete with other plans. like suncom (one price) or cingular (roll over minutes). it is free night and weekends and nights start at 9:00pm and sprint starts at 7:00pm. but i just don't want to change because i don't know if the service would be that good.

I like T-mobile. Although alot of people joke about their service and stuff, its really quite decent.
And they are a heck of a lot more helpful when it comes to technical and/or general help.

It all depends on what your looking for, coverage areas, pricing, how much your going to use it, and can you afford to stick to a 2 year contract.
