roger bannister's four minute mile. it was thought to be impossible, but he did it anyway. one reason it was so great is that once he showed it was possible, others could do it, and now high school runners routinely run sub four minute miles.

if you consider mountainclimbing, sir edmond hillary (and his sherpa guide) climbing mount everest may have topped that, basically for the same reason.
