Bug is a term used for any thing that is small. Insect is a specific type of animal.

Nothing. Insects is a more mature name for bugs.

resisting an attempt to reference a certain long-eared cartoon character (though i guess i just did), there is no semantic difference, it's just a matter of level of english...if you're writing a formal essay, i'd use insects, if you're casually talking to your friend, you can say bugs
