please encourage him to speak with his doctor. It is totally not unusual to be depressed after a major injury like that. They can help him by referring him to a counselor or giving him anti-depressants. Also, if he is not following the doctor's instructions (which can happen when you are depressed) it takes a lot longer to heal. Encourage him to be as active as his doctor recommends. Talk to your mom, if possible and enlist her help in getting him some help. Depression is curable, and he does not have to suffer. If it is a work related injury, the workers' comp insurance may be able to provide all the treatment for his depression at no cost to him. Also, if it is a work related injury, you may want to suggest he call a workers' comp attorney, who can help him get through all the paperwork and deal with the insurance agency.
Constantly remind him that you love him and you want him to be happy. Remind yourself that he loves you, he is just suffering right now.
Be as upbeat as you can, and make sure you have a support network, to help you cope. His depression can affect you as well. Keep your head up and good luck!

Do you mean the cartilage inbetween his spinal column? Trust me on this he will never be 100% comfortable. I had a similar problem, caryilage pressure on my sciatic nerve which runs all the way down your leg into your foot. Hot water bottles seemed to ease the pain for me but it took three weeks before i could sit down on the couch. There must be a way to insert an artificial rubber inbetween the bone in the spin. Ive heard of other artificial joints, if your in the UK i know it can be hard to get proper treatment. Im still waiting for physio and ive been back at work for months. And i pay taxes for what exactly????
Maybe you need to research his problem get some facts and remedies, if you find somthing to ease his pain he'll thank you for it an cheer up a bit. Dont pester him just tell him your there is he needs anything. Good luck..

It's very difficult to be in a good mood when your hurting. It will take some time for your family to adjust to his disability and hopefully his depression will alleviate itself over time. I'm sure your father knows you care and that your there for him.
Part of the depression comes from not being able to work, it is a difficult thing to understand unless you've had that experience. There is nothing that you can do specifically to help him that you aren't probably doing already.
Talk to an Occupational Therapist, see if his insurance will cover home health care, brain storm on things your dad can do to feel useful again... things he enjoys doing that maybe he didn't have time to do before his injury.

hey..ok check this out. I am at home right now on disability with exactly the same problem for the last 4 months. I got hurt lifting a heavy box at work, as a result I have a herniated disk and pinched nerves.
Did your dad loose his job ? I still have mine but sitting home and constant pain has got me depressed as well. My doctor prescribed mild anti depressent and it has helped me regain my mood. Encourage your dad to keep himself busy with whatever he likes to do, even if it is just reading books and sitting around..
Also since he doesn't feel well..it may be best to leave him alone to rest rather than aggrevate him..
hope it helps..

You can't stop his depression...
His reason for depression is understandable
and will probably lift as his back heals and he
begins to accept his limitations...
Be very loving & patient during this ordeal, reassuring
him that he's still the BEST FATHER no matter what...
If the depression lingers, determine if there's
counseling to help him be the best he can be.
Remember, the human body is amazing!
Likely his physical therapy will do wonders for him.
Hang in there, and please let us know how he progresses.

Sew it back shut.
Oh, sorry, just kidding. The top part is all I could read at first.
Yell back and tell him it isn't your fault. Then tell him calmly things will eventually get better and you are there for him.
