question is this car carb or fuel inj. is it a 2.8l 5.0l or5.7l eng all three of these eng do not have a timeing belt they have a chain and gears they do not have 2 gears on the distribtor they have only one the timeing can be advanced not retarded the eng idle can be set to high or the eng can be operating at a temp 220dg.check the coolant level. let me know what you find.

I'm guessing a 305 or 350 4 barrel but there were V-6s too, with little 2 barrel carbs. Usually, improper ignition timing will cause an engine to "run on" after the ignition is off. If it has a carburator, a poorly adjusted carburator could also cause "run on" because as the ignition is turned off, the engine still sucks in some fuel. Since the pistons are hot, they might ignite the fuel causing it to "run on". Also, a badly carboned up engine will run on because the carbon deposits are like hot coals in the cylinder, and fuel will expolde when it comes in contact with it, even if the ignition is off. Have a good tune-up, and have a good mechanic diagnose your fuel delivery system. Loss of power, and run on sound fuel related, but a tune up includes the timing adjustment too so it may solve the problem. Without knowing the general condition of your vehicle or the type of fuel/ignition system you have, it's hard to be more specific.

Timing sounds retarded....ignition timing. Put a timing light on it. They have gears on the bottom of the distributer that can fall apart too. Buy a rebuilt distributer and put it in time. The timing belt may have jumped time too.....I couldn't be sure without hearing it and seeing it. Check the timing though. When it's all fixed...if it still deisels when you turn it off.....bump the ignition timing up a degree or two and it will stop. Overheating can also cause deiseling.....check the temp.

can be timimg or try running 93 octane if already running 93 octane try an octane booster. i had a 78 gmc jimmy and it did the same thing and when ran two tanks of 93 it stopped but you have to continue to use 93.

Could be many things but I would advise a tuneup, plugs, fuel filter, wires, new rotor and distriburator cap and check the timing.

that is called "dieseling", burning off fuel after shutdown. Try a good tune up, and carb clean out, see if that helps.
