How many countries compete to be in the world cup finals (the top 32)?

I know that there are 32 teams in the World Cup finals, but I was wondering about the number of teams that compete to make it to that point. I think it is over 100.

it differs from cup to cup, as does the world's country count. There is no set amount of slots to participate. any country may participate and the elimination rounds just keep paring them down like any play-off series.

According to USA Today, 194 countries competed to be in the 2006 World Cup finals. That's out of the 205 currently ranked by FIFA. American Samoa is currently in last place, in case you're keeping track.
