I am going to be out in the sun quite a bit over 4th of July weekend and want to avoid getting my fair skin sunburned. Does anyone know if doing Mystic Tan or using self tanner will help reduce my changes of getting sunburned? Kind of how if you have a base tan, you tend to just get more tan? I know it won't stop it from happening and I plan to use sunblock, but would it help me get further tanned instead of pink/red?

No, these types of tans are purely cosmetic and offer no protection from the sun. Prepare your skin by tanning in a basic level bed that provides UV-B rays... but start slow so you don't burn. Make sure to use an SPF 20 at least...reapply often, especially after swimming...even if it's waterproof!

Since Mystic Tan or any self tanner only contains a lotion that darkens your skin tone, the answer is no. The only solution is to wear an SPF of 15 or more, but no higher than 45 as anything higher than that basically gives you less protection than you would think.
However, the best solution to not getting a sunburn at all, is basically to stay out of the sun as much as possible between 10AM and 4PM in the afternoon as that is when the suns rays are are closest to Earth and can cause more damage.

I work at a tanning salon and the mystic is really popular. It last's about 6-9 days normally and doesn't appear orange. It doesn't prevent sunburn whatsoever and it will also come off if you get in chlorine or ocean water. Otherwise, it's an quick tan and looks great.

Nope, only SUNSCREEN with a high SPF prevents sunburns. Your best bet to avoid getting a sunburn is to use an SPF 45 and reapply it every 2 hours. Mystic Tan simply gets you looking darker. There's no sunscreen in it.

No it does not prevent sunburn and has no sunblock in the product. You should use a sunblock of at least 30 before you go out in the sun and never rely on make up that claims it has SPF in it. You should always apply more before your make up application. I am an Esthetician and specialize in skincare. Good Luck.

no, you should use a high number of SPF lotion. Once you go over 15, it will give you the same amount of protection as 15 (so you'll get a little tan) but it will last a longer time. The lotions and spray-on tans dye you skin, you aren't actually exposed to any light waves that will make you tan.

No not at all.
They dye the top few layers of your skin to look like a tan, but offer no sun protection.
Sorry, still gotta use sunscreen.
