I know the primary medical conribution from this time was the use of morphine, and I seem to remember that is was used in surgical amputations. I don't have hard facts to back me up, but I seem to remember that the brunt of triage during the civil war was to identify those who could be saved through surgical amputation as opposed to those who would likely bleed out anyway.

Because the White north fought the White south in an effort to free the black man. MANY white people from the north died an effort to free the black man from the slavery he endured. But don't let history fool you, Black america today will have you believe that the White man as a whole has been against the black man forever. So history is scewed. The real answer to your question though is medicine and infection. These men were shot at close proximity with home-made metal round shots. They were laden with disease. The lack of medicine to fight infections and the lack of knowledge to stop the bleeding of injured Soldiers ultimately led to the high mortality rate. when people think about the 4K American deaths in Iraq over 5 years, it pales in comparison to any other conflict. If they had the internet and todays media during WWII, it would have been amazing.

So how do you pick the winning answer since we all know its amputations.... Maybe a list of some of the famous war amputees? Gen. Ewell-leg, Gen. Hood-arm, Stonewall Jackson, Gen. O.Howard, Gen.John B. Gordon, and i'm sure many more.

Definitely amputations. There are still pictures of field "hospitals" after a battle, with the arms and legs stacked like cordwood.

I would guess limb amputations. They did not have adequate pain management or antibiotics, so that left them little choice but to amputate. It could also be removal of bullets and debris.

Amputations of limbs with a hacksaw. They went from one table to the other without washing the blood from their instruments. More soldiers died from infections than the ones who died in battle.

Most deaths occurred from INFECTIONS, not the actual "surgery"
