I treat them sooooo nicely that they either feel like REAL jerks when I'm done or they're just hopeless. In that case, I feel pretty good about myself for not lowering myself to their level. And I've got a new, "Ya gotta hear this!" one for the lunch room or water cooler. LOL!

This is especially important if there are other customers witnessing the transaction. How you deal with a difficult customer demonstrates your professionalism and flexibility. When other customers see this, they will both seek you out, and recommend you to their friends and business partners. It always pays in the end!

I use to work at a gas station and the first year there I went along with that customer is always right crap. It took me to year to say screw it and just treat them like garbage in return and laugh as they walk out of the store pissed. If I could change one thing I would have just started off doing that in the first place.

Demand politeness and respect of them if they want it from me. If they refuse to be decent, hang up or refuse service.

I would tell them,"If you can't speak to me with respect than I can't help you. Period".
