14-21 days in advance is usually your best bet. No later tho, you might end up paying a lot more. Sometimes you can find a cheaper flight at the last minute, but not always. Your better off getting one sooner than later.

Usually 2-4 weeks in advance is optimal. But, sometimes you can get a good deal on a last-minute ticket if they undersell a flight. I've had this happen twice at Christmas.
