I know about the American Gold and Silver eagle, but was wondering if there was something better. Its to be a gift to a friend.

Hi... I am a coin dealer. There are many possibilities for 1999 dated coins... you can buy them a 1999 Proof set, which has one each of every coin...cent, nickel, dime, all 5 statehood quarters (that was the 1st year for them), Half dollar, and Sacagawea golden dollar. It's also increased in value due to its low mintage and will likely continue to increase. If you REALLY like them, you could buy them the SILVER proof set (same setup but silver coins)...but the problem there is the price...it will be around $375, and it is the rarest 1999 Mint issued set. As far as a nice, attractive, relatively inexpensive yet nice gift, I like the Proof silver Eagle. It looks good and comes in a distinctive velvet gift box.

Mt suggestion is to go to your local coin shop. They will show you several options indifferent price ranges.

Hope this helped.
