I am a 35 year old male and am having a problem with issues over buying a house from my father. There are issues with things breaking down or need renovations that everytime I go to him about it, it is like I caused the problem and it is my fault. I can not seem to get past that child to adult stage with him. I am married and the stress it causes my wife and I seems to be effecting us health wise. They also have an in-law suite that he had renovated before we moved into the house. We love the house because it has good acreage and great school district for our 2 kids that are still in elementary school. It has a beautiful yard for family picnics as well as for playing any outdoor games. Is there any advise anyone can give me to break this wall I have between me and my father and finally be an adult in his eyes?

Well, if you're buying it then you should be the one responsible for the upkeep. If you were renting it would be his place to fix it, but it's your problem now. Good luck.

How about asking him out for a brewsky and seeing if that will loosen you up enough to be able to talk to your dad. I have had a problem talking to dad at one point and once I finally did, well all the talks from then on were easy. Its just that first one. If ya'll dont drink then maybe do lunch. I would suggest a meeting in public. Less chance of a confrontation or heated moment. I think this is a very normal and typical thing, the father and son adult talk thing you know. I really do know what you are going through on that. Its a tough one but it can be done. I wouldnt suggest getting totally blitzed but just a couple belts to feel up to it. Just trying to help......

Well, there is nothing to say. From my opinion, i think you should fix the house at your own cost - Remember, after all, you and him are father and son. There is nothing you can do to change it.
