I'll keep this short and easy lol. I'm 20 and running my own web design business. I have made $1000's from just word of mouth, no advertising or networking or anything, just me telling a few individuals. Which brings me to my next question, what kind of methods/solutions would you use to help grow the business?

Hey mate...I have been there and done that. I am in the same boat as you. It is so hard to compete with India though! There is Elance.com. It is like a bid/proposals forum online where you pay them a monthly fee to be able to bid on ppl looking for web design. There is also Craigslist.org..that one is free. Do press releases for free PR on PRWEB.com and the lot.
Advertise in the local paper or chamber of commerce.
Also good to be a certified web designer. IAWMD membership helps. Also, you can sell templates online or submit free templates to sites like freelayouts.com for free PR.
There is also this ace book I bought. It is called How to Start a Home Based Web Design Business. It is by Jim Smith. I think that would be the best book for you.

you might not like it but you have to advertise, make your site accessible and usable so audience wont get confuse in browsing it, update your site daily, make sure the audience gets fresh contents, have a nice illustrations to make them hang-around your site
