My horse got lame from a hoof absyss that left him lame for over 4 months. He's a quarter horse and has lost a lot of shoulder muscle from lack of excercise...I don't need it back too quickly, but I am also using him as an example for a horse research project I am doing.

probally a good few weeks, it depends on how fit your horse was before and how much time you have to work him. Do lots of trotting and if possible ride up and down hills. They also make muscle mass supplements (I actully just saw an ad for a new one in Equestrian Mag today) so i would go to your local tack shop or look online for something that looks good. Remember not to rush him though, don't work him every day, and if you do lots of hard work (eg. jumping) wrap his legs after your ride. Also make sure to keep working on that absessed hoof, keep a close eye on it so you make sure it doesn't happen again.

Need lots of info to answer. What kind of lameness? What kind of injury? Why was muscle lost and how long has the horse been off? There's a big difference rehabbing a horse from a bout with founder than a sesamoid injury and different still from a wreck in a fence or other injury. Why do you need to build muscle quickly and what do you consider quickly? There's not enough information and far too much open area to give a concise answer. :-(

Im Assuming the Abcess is gone but tenderness Im sure is still there.Just take it slow and just do turn out when ok'd by your vet as Im sure he will be full of energy and get his own excercise in.

After that and you still want to bulk him back up you can lunge him a bit working UP TO 15 minutes a day.
It wont take much time at all.

Most importantly is the horse and to really keep an eye out for extreme soreness and tenderness in that hoof.

Make sure he is not sore on the hoof that was abcessed.
You should start slow and work him up.
5-10 minutes of walk 5 minutes of trot 5-10 minutes of walk
Three times per week
If he goes good at that increase your times up to 20 minutes each.
Add some hill work both up at a trot and down at a walk.Hills are a great work out. Builds up muscles.
It should not take long to get him back into shape if he was in good shape before. My TB has lots of time off and I can get him back up to speed in a couple of weeks but he is very fit and seems to stay fit.

Trot for about 45 minutes a day, about 5 days a week. Trotting is the best way to build muscle mass. If you want to build muscle AND lose fat, cut down on your horse's feed by a third or half. My horse was 100 lbs overweight when I got her, and within three months, she was trim and very muscular.

He needs to swim and built back his muscle tone. This comes from a good trainer, they have places where horses can swim. special equipment or something, unless you have a lake near you. It really works and builds muscle tone fast.
