Every time minimum wage has been raised in the past, the prices of everything else follows. I'm only 27, and I remember working for $4.25 an hour. I don't think $7 is enough to live on, but I'm not sure that even raising it to that will do any good.

Businesses are hurting? Stock market hits an all time high and businesses pay 12% less tax now than they did in 1980. I think this question should really be "Why does capitalism keep the working class under their boot instead of rewarding them for making their companies a record profit" 63% of Fortune 500 companies posted record profit margins in 2012. Weak economic recovery my ***. Edit 1: To the people who say it would force companies to inflate their prices. No it wouldn't. It would force companies to scale back their bonuses, maybe. Given that so many multinational companies are selling product through the roof as it is, why doesn't the working class get advancement? Because the company can fire the employee instead of promoting him (while replacing him with someone who would rather live on 7.50$ p/hr as opposed to be unemployed). You seem to think only kids work these jobs. I'm 28. I have a college degree in my field. There are only so many jobs at a company. My other option is to move to a different region with a better pay scale. Either that, or go into a different field with a better chance of advancement and zero experience. You guys make a TON of sense /sarcasm/

I think the minimum wage should be increased to at least $7 per hour. If I work 40 hrs a week at my job my check would only be 239 per week! Shouldn't wages go up with the cost of living?

The idea of a federal minimum wage is rediculous. To use the idea of an earlier poster (about it not being enough in New York), each state has a different standard of living. In other words, to make minimum wage in one state is a lot less than in others.
What's the solution? Mandate that each state set its own minimum wage law (as 12 states, i think, already do).

I think it should be raised. It will cost a little more for some things but people can't get by with the minimum wage.
Everyone that works should make enough to at least feed their family.

By raising the minimum wage, we force corporations to shift more American jobs overseas. They can't afford to keep jobs here as it is! Furthermore, if it is raised, virtually everything will begin to cost more as there is a direct correlation--inflation will become even more rampant.
