This is not an easy question to answer, since in most states, there is no simple answer. In general, a parent may use "reasonable force" in disciplining a minor child, but what is "reasonable" from one situation to another may vary greatly. For example, the use of force would be more reasonable if an older child is at risk of seriously harming a younger child, than if that older child was simply late for dinner.

To begin with there's a big difference. Today I see very little discipline showing up in the children compared to good discipline from yesteryears. There is nothing more impolite then a child interrupting a conversation going on between two adults. Don't think the generations starting in the 70's even attempted to carry on family discipline. And it shows big time. Just go into a grocery store and watch the little ones these days. Parents just don't give a damn. I really feel sorry for teachers in the schools and often wonder why they even bother to enter the field any more with the illmannered children they have to put up with these days. Corporal punishment in schools was taken away from them and discipline no longer exists. Now a days they expell them. Big deal... they can sit at home and watch TV or play with their PS2's. Just what they wanted to do in the first place. You can see the change in these kids as adults today without blinking an eye. All you hear or read any more is child abuse these days and not a word about discipline. Why? Because I don't think it exists today. So young lady, if when I spanked one of my children years ago it was called discipline.... today it's called abuse.

Pinch, biting I cannot see that as discipline in any circumstance. But I would say that the main differences would rest on intent and end result. Discipline comes from a position of love, whether it involves corporal punishment or otherwise. It's goal is to correct or keep them safe from harm. Abuse, whether physical or mental, is aimed at hurting the person at some level. There is no love at all involved in those actions.

Carlos Mencia (Comedy Central - Mind of Mencia) jokes about how white people won't discipline their children the way blacks do: with a good dose of "whup ***".

I think physical punishment of children is not much of a deterrent. A parent has to be smarter than the child, and has to set strict boundaries. A much more effective form of discipline is to tell your children how disappointed you are in them. The Amish use "shunning" to silently punish those who break Amish law. They simply will not talk to nor acknowledge the existence of those accused of misdeeds.

It's very effective.

I saw a riveting tv series last year called "Brat Camp", in which desperate parents sent their kids away to a wilderness camp where they had to follow orders, do chores, perform physical work, and show an improvement in their attitude.

I think most kids could benefit from an experience like this. Forget smacking your kid to make him behave. Send him to a "brat camp" and he'll come back saying "Yes sir!"

This question is like asking which came first the Chicken or the egg. ABUSE is repeated physical, verbal, or mental anguish that is repeated in any, or all of these ways usually, but not limited to, more than one time, by someone who is mentally sick and out of control whether continually or occasionally.

Discipline- a system of rules that are to be followed for the conduct of members.

Boy its sad that you have to ask that question!!!!! Of course its abuse, if you are doing it stop and get some help fast. If someone is doing it to you report them and get some help too. They also have a group of people called Parents Anonymous, they help people stop abusing their kids and can give you a break from caring for them if you need it to get help. It should never occur. This sounds like something one would do to a baby, please get help before it is too late!!! If it is someone else you know call the division of children and youth or the police, the child could get killed.
