Work very much a day before your flight and sleep less, so when you get in the airplane, you will feel so exhausted that will fall sleep. Don't forget to put those things in your ear, there is always someone snoring or a baby crying.... This is what I do every time I flight (no because I am afraid, but I hate being for hours in there).
About being nervous in a new place, I don't know exactly what you can do. Most people feels this way about the unknowing, it's normal. I think one or two days of your arrived, you will feel much better. I would try to check over the net guides about the place, to get more familiar and make plans to where go and to do, this way, the trip can be more pleasurable.

Before you fly you need to try to understand what the plane will do and what movements and noises are a regular part of flying and not an indication of a problem.
1. When the plane is on the ground at the gate it is usually pushed back from the gate by a tug and you may hear noises from that. You may also hear noises when luggage is being loaded and the bottom doors are closed.
2. Before the plane flies the wings have to be adjusted for more lift and you may hear noises sounding like a drill or saw as the wing flaps are extended. That's also normal. Then you may hear the sounds of the engines reving up.
3. The plane will roll down the runway and pick up speed and you will probably be pushed back into your seat as the engines are very powerful.
4. When the plane clears the ground you may hear the sound of the wheels being retracted and the bottom doors being closed. After a short while you may hear the drilling sound again as the wings are positions for flight.
5. If you are flying on a partly or mostly cloudy day, you will feel the flight get rough as the plane goes through the clouds and that is because the moisture in the clouds causes the engines to run roughly for a few seconds, and then smooth out after clearing all of the clouds.
6. The flight should be smooth and airlines always make it a point of finding the altitude which is smoothest and they also steer around and away from bad weather.
7. When the plane is about ready to land you may feel it slow a bit and also hear the wings start to adjust and the landing gear door open and teh sound of air rushing. All of that is normal.

As another person already said, you'll hear some pretty funky noises from the airplane as you're taking off and climbing up to cruising altitude.
The landing gear will be getting retracted, the wing flaps will be doing their thing, and so on. Not to worry ... it's all normal.
You might feel a bumpy ride, too -- especially while taking off. It's normal to be uneasy during that, but try not to be scared.
Pilots don't mind some bumps and turbulence; they just don't want to lose speed and altitude, which they won't.
When the pilot guns the engines and you start down the runway on takeoff, some people play a "takeoff song" in their heads (can't do it for real; have to turn off electronic equipment).
For me, that song is "Are You Gonna Go My Way" by Lenny Kravitz ... !

I used to be a nervous flier too but that was because I'd only fly maybe once every 2 or 3 years. Since I've moved to this job, I fly more often and I've lost the anxiety of flying.
You could also down some booze before your flight to calm your nerves.

Depends on how far you have to fly. If over 6 hours, take a sleeping tablet. If under six hours, have a drink or two before, and if you're not of age to drink, find some natural anti anxiety med, like "rescue remedy" it helps.

Some anxiety is perfectly normal. After all, it gets you to the airport on time for security and check in, makes you lock your door behind you, and buckle your seatbelt. Pack for your flight (snacks, etc.,) and trip (swimsuit, etc.). You might want to make a list (pack, trip to airport, check luggage, etc.) and check each one off. That gives you something to do and also shows you how much you have done. It's easier to break something up into small increments. Enjoy your trip!

talk to your doctor, depending upon your level of anxiety, he/she may be able to prescribe something. My doctor did and it helped alot. didn't even feel the trip. Had to do it once. after that it was ok.

My doctor gave me Antivan for my panic attacks. You can buy dramamine for travel sickness and it will put u to sleep. Both will do the trick. Not together, one or the other....Sweet dreams
