Yes- an operating system manages a computer's memory, it's input/output systems, and it's user interface.
The most popular systems are Windows, the most common system, Macintosh, a system usually promoted to home users, UNIX, which is often used on network servers, and Linux and BSD, which are free systems generally deveoped by independant programmers.

I have no Idea what your asking, so Ill give a basic rundown,
1. Windows - this is a very reliable OS, bill gates knew what he was doing when he stole DOS, and then changed the name and Sued the inventer. The only real problem with this is that many open source users like to create viruses for it.
2. Macantosh - Gay, though it is extremely basic and user friendly, it is very straight forward, likes to freeze on you if you don't have everything in exact proportion, and anything with one button on its mouse can suck it.
3. Unix/Linux - Multiple orgasms, these are mostly Open Source/GUI/Free though you need a little experience to handle it, you can conform these to what ever you please. I would advise you to download one of these over any others.
Just keep in mind 2 things, it's your choice, and Macs are gay

Are you talking PC or Mac? Or do you mean Nintendo or X Box?
Please try to be a little more specific.
For computers there are three: Windows on the PC which is like a bicycle, cranky and in need of improvement, but everybody tries to make software for it. Linix on the PC which is as sleek as the Batmoblie, but programs written for it are just as rare. For the Mac their is Jaguar, and Leopard; As sleek as a big cat, but how often do you see one? There is now a version of Mac that can run Windows. I haven't seen it, but Windows is a Graphic Interface over DOS (one reason why it is so quirky), and Windows on a Mac would have to lay Windows on top of the Mac OS which could make it real cranky.
An impromptu survey in the US Congress showed that over 90% use Windows on the PC.

are you asking what are the different kinds of operating systems? there are several but the ones i know of are linux, openbds, sparcstation, unix, windows, amiga, mac os, palmos, and os's used by other devices...linux comes in thousands of varieties because it is the only open source software...u can download it free online and burn it to a cd as well as buy it very cheaply..the only trade-off is easy installation and ease of use

Mac is good for graphics and music and stuff like that.
Windows is good for office-type stuff like word processing and various other applications.
Linux is good if you want extreme customizeability and for servers.
