It was a Japanese General who said that " A man must realize he is like a tiny ant" . I.E. the more proud you are of yourself, the more you set yourself up for dissappointment in a world you do not control.

Of course, you are really asking what goals you should pursue, and your first suggestion is much better than 2 or 3.
