I know his oldest son John became a reporter and was killed when covering a story, but I can't remember what happened to his wife (Grace), and they had another son and a daughter on the episode I just watched.

I don't remember what happened to Grace, but, the 2 children you are thinking of are Carl and Alicia. Their parents were killed in a buggy accident, and Charles was asked to find a family to adopt the 2 kids. So, they ended up being taken in by Mr.Edwards and Grace.

His first wife and child died (they were never on the show) After he married the Widow Snyder, they adopted or took in 2 kids. Then he started drinking again and she left him. I have seen every episode 40 times :) You can come straight to me for LHOTP questions.

After the son died he started drinking again and Grace threw him out. That is his second family. His first family was wiped out by scarlet fever.

Mr Edwards married the Widow Snyder because Charles was trying to find a home for 3 kids whose mother got sick and died. The kids were about to be separated and sent to two different homes. Mr Edwards married Grace so they could adopt and keep all three kids together.
