Unfortunately that is what we have evolved into, at least a majority have. Most people feel if they don't have those things they will be considered lower class. Therefore most peopIe live above their means to keep up with Jone's as the saying goes. I know growing up whatever I had I was happy with. I instilled that into my children as well. To me that is just a status that people feel they have to follow or they will be left behind. Having a loving family to me is the most important thing you can have. Its too much work to try and achieve what you cannot have. I believe in the old saying that all the money in the world does not make a happy person. It just provides a false sense of security. You can't buy love with your money or your clothes.
You are so right in saying that when you die none of this will matter. So be happy with what you have and try to live a normal happy life and don't worry about what really isn't important. Life is too short for that.

Boy, that is a perplexing question. I think some people believe that the more they have the happier they will be. Those of us that don't really care about the material things have accepted life as it is. We come into this world with nothing and we will go out the same way. Unfortunately those that have many material things want more and more. I feel that I know someone just like that. I am happy even if I don't have something that someone else may have. We need to keep our minds open and our eyes on the right path. I know, you're saying "What is the right path?" None of us know exactly where we are headed and what is in store for us. We just have to take one day at a time and let our maker lead us. Hope this helps!

I agree with you. I guess we could blame it on current influences, especially media, of making "wants" into "needs", and this trend is on the rise. I'm trying my best to live simply, though currently I cannot afford to have luxuries in life, I'm satisfied on my situation, for I am blessed with a good family and good relationships.
The thing that I agree with you most is the relationships that we have is all that matters. Relationships are eternal, material things are only temporal.

I seek these answers all the time. I struggle daily with finding the path that allows me to survive in our culture, and reach out to others. There are no easy answers, nor any one path that is "right". I suggest, whenever possible, doing a few simple things:
-turn off the television
-go play in the outdoors
-ask yourself, and your kids, what is really being depicted in ads, movies, and media
-find a strength to use to reach out to others
-see an issue from the viewpoint of your enemy
-learn all you can about people you admire

I'm seeing that you're not a material girl - that's good for you. We didn't ever even try to keep up with those Jones people (whoever they are). :D
