im in highschool, and i wanted to do wrestling. my parents refused cuz my older brother got a concussion and changed his eating habits. they also say all wrestlers are short cuz it's bad for your growth plates (picking up your opponent), and they are all fat/bulky. i disagree.

My son wrestled in Junior high and High school 7 years. And yes you do get injured sometimes. And it does not matter if you follow the safety guidelines. Things happen he has had concussions, seperated ribs, broken fingers and more. Also depends on your coach. My sons coach was a jerk who only wanted trophys and nothing less. So my sons eating habits changed and so did his attitude. I was glad when he got out of school just because of the things that happened. If you want to wrestle look into it more do some research on your coaches and the school wrestling team. Personally I think it is a great sport if it is taught right. But be aware you can and will be injured wrestiling. Sit down and have a heart to heart with your parents but do what they say. You will look back as you get older and thank them. Besides maybe there is a local boys and girls club that you can wrestle at?? But this is my personal experience with wrestling. I can tell you a lot about junior high and high school wrestling. At least what happened with my son.

It CAN be dangerous, but if you are careful and follow all the safety precautions, you should be fine. Unfortunately, injuries do happen. So listen to your coach carefully and always wear the appropriate protection. Take care of yourself.

PS: I didn't think you are allowed to actually "pick up" your opponent in high school wrestling? I don't think my high school let them, I'm not sure though, but either way, that shouldn't hurt your growth. Height is genetic. And changing eating habits isn't always a bad thing either. Wrestlers (or any other sports players) need to be in very good condition and usually eat BETTER as a result (usually making them very fit, not fat or bulky).

One of the reason why your parents will not agree with you is because of your brother experience. Parent know best. If you can, choose another sport like lifting weight that little bit close to wrestling

I think any sport can be dangerous...it doesn't matter from one to the other....

I have never heard that it is bad for your growth plates....my suggestion is to talk to the coach to help alleviate your parents fears.

I don't know of any sport that isn't dangerous to some degree. If it is something you really want to do, go for it. There are risks involved with everything in life.

it is as dangerous as any other sport. the weight control can be a health issue if too much is attempted to be lost too quick.

overall the sport is great for you. your connditioning is through the roof and it s build self confidence.
