My tires were purchased four years ago, they have around 60 000 miles on them. The tread is fine, but my sidewalls are cracking.

Tires get a condition called "dry rot" . Thi shappens frm the UV rays from teh sun. It basically prematurely ages a tire. Mileage is not teh killer here. It is time and exposure to sunlight or UV rays. Remember that thr rubber in your tire is a chemical compound. Over time, the compounds start to break down. It is inevitable. Kepping your car in the garage all the time and keeping weight off of them will help, but it would be a pain to raise your car every night.

Hope this helps

Premature sidewall cracking can also be attributed to excessive use of silicone based "tire shine" products. If you use these products and your tires are less than three years old then this is probably your answer. Studies have shown that aerosol spray tire shine causes much less damage than the pump sprays.
What ever caused your sidewalls to crack, you should replace them immediately.
