Is it true that if I stay connected to something with my IP address, then at the end of my current IP's lease time the DHCP will reestablish the lease? I'm trying to find out, because my computer's dynamic IP has been the same for about a month now, and for the entire month, (apart from rebooting) my computer has had the Apache HTTP server running. So, it's nice to have the same IP, but I would like to know if that's why it's not changing.

"You are correct that as long as your PC is turned on, it will keep the same IP address. The server can not change the IP while you are using it. Even if you turn it on and off, if it is on every time the server checks, you will keep the same IP."

That's all i was looking to know. You'll get 10 points when the 24 hour thing is done.

As each ISP sets up their own rules, I can not tell you for certain. But I can tell you the "industries standards". IP addresses are normally leased for a certain length of time, (usually in the 3-7 days range). This is so that IP addresses not being used will be freed up and returned to the "pool". At some point during the lease (usually about 3/4 of the way through it) the server will begin checking for the IP. If it is in use, it renews the IP for what the length of a normal lease is.

You are correct that as long as your PC is turned on, it will keep the same IP address. The server can not change the IP while you are using it. Even if you turn it on and off, if it is on every time the server checks, you will keep the same IP.

But again, these are just the standards, and may not be correct for your ISP.

Generally unless you are using Dial-Up, or AOL, your IP address will only change if your internet connection is reset, whether by your router or by the connection shutting down.
