North Carolina is a LONG state, so there are plenty of options. Some areas are more diverse than others, some have MUCH better schools, jobs are better in other places. Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill is a bustling area. Charlotte actually has some nice suburban areas (you don't want to live IN the city). There are plenty of smaller towns, but I would avoid the area in the eastern state along the SC border, because it is poor and rural. Lots of areas up 95 toward VA are nice once you get past Fayetteville, and most of the mountain areas can be nice, but some are VERY secluded.

Honestly, Chapel Hill is the best area. The schools are great, and the people are very nice. Not to mention the town itself is very diverse, so you get a good feeling of the different cultures. It's also beautiful! I lived there for two years before moving back to Durham; it's a little expensive.
