It's an imaginary line that connects the points at which a drop of water would flow either east or west, to the atlantic or pacific ocean. Dump a bucket of water east of the line, it goes to the Atlantic. Dump it west of the line, it's heading for the Pacific.

The divide is the exact place where water flows either east or west to the oceans, if your mountain range runs north to south. In other words, if you were standing right on the divide and your poured a bucket of water out on your East side, that water would eventually make it's way to the eastern ocean. If you poured in out on your west side, it would flow to the western ocean. This is the continental divide.
