This is our first summer in this house, and we are discovering all of the plants that the previous owners planted. This is either a very large bush or a small tree. The berries are bright red and are the size and shape of cherries. They have a pit in the center and the flesh inside is white. Does anyone know what these are??

They might be a different type of cherry like bing, or they could just be a decorative ( non-edible).

Don't know exactly what it is, but as a general rule, small fruits (cherry sized) that are round (as opposed to blackberry shaped) are poisonous to humans. (There are obvious exceptions like cherries and blueberries).

If you have a picture, that will help.
It would also help to know the texture and color of the fruit.
There is a Japanese variety of plum that is similar in size to a cherry. Very tasty.

They could possibly be red currants. Red currants are used to make jams and jellies. My neighbors growing up had some and the jams and jellies they gave to us from those plants were really good.

You & LMB have made good deductions (and without a pic),. Wild strawberry (Frageria sp.) grows down here in the deep south, too! Usually Maverick is right on, but........

I would take a sample of the fruit and the leaf and visit your local nursery. They should be able to tell you what it is .
