What you are describing is called divination. There are many forms of divination: tarot, I ching, tea leaves, astrology, requests for guidance... to name a few. It's ok to not like the 'sign you get' and you are not bound to follow any 'sign'. In any situation there are multiple options... divination is one way to come up with options that we may have not thought of before. We have the opportunity to weigh the merits of any possible action and make our best choice. And, remember, even choices are not embedded in stone... if you find out your choice doesn't work, you can always modify it.

No. I've adopted a very positive view when it comes to prayer and what the Father communicates to me has been encouraging.
In a dream recently, I remember asking God if my prayers were any use whatsoever, because I pray for a lot of different reasons and for a lot of different people and different healings, and I don't always know if God has heard me, or if I'm asking for things that simply don't match His plans and so forth, and I remember in this dream, God had a simple answer for me. His answer was "I always hear, and it always helps." Now, I would like to correct a bit of your word choice in your question's added details, you imply that you sometimes pray for " a sign", and that you are afraid you won't like "the sign" you get. God is not in the habit of dispensing signs, so very superstitious to put it that way IMO. I would rather hear you say, "when I ask God to show me what is best for me and my life, when I ask the Father for his guidance..."
because, the will of God does not appear in the form of a burnt piece of toast, or a broken glass, or a shadowy cloud. God lives within you, and His voice calls out within your heart and sometimes in dreams. Listen and believe. Thanks for a good question, my prayer is with you now. ---UCSteve

I never pray for a sign from God, in my prayers I always tell him what I am thankful for, the people I want him to protect and some help if i need it in certain areas

It takes alot of faith to pray for a sign. And at the same time, praying for a sign is cowardly. What is your definition of a "sign"? Is it a huge phenomenon? The Bible says that the Holy Spirit speaks with a "still, small voice". Just keep reading your Bible and asking God to speak to you and at the same time ask Him to give you the "ears" to hear His voice. He loves you and longs for a relationship with you. Instead of asking for a sign, just tell Him what your struggling with and ask Him for help.

No, that would be fear of no sign at all, thus creating doubt. Not getting a sign one may interpret as rejection, or even question of his existance. Rather than risk either you choose to do nothing.

I would imagine that if some type of "god" existed, he/she/them/it/us would give a sign or not give a sign entirely according to what mood he/she/them/it/us was in, irregardless of what we pray for.
"God" could neither be persuaded, nor prevented, from giving a "sign".
