USA. All in all it is a nice place and the people are friendly. But I will mention some of my criticisms. The roads are worst in EU. Even with all the road projects going on. They build what are called by-passes whereby each traffic "black spot" is fixed by bypassing a road around a town that is severly bottlenecked. This only serves to push the bottleneck on to the next town or village.
There's supposed to be a national health care program but if you depend on this you'll be dead long before it's your turn on the operating table. Most people buy health insurance from VHI or BUPA.
Petrol currently runs at €1.18/ L. This equates to approximately $5.50 /US gal. And that's cheaper than the UK.
Income tax is 42% if you make any decent money. What you have left over to spend, they take another 21% at the till for VAT which is a national sales tax.
There's also a lot of stealth taxes, the usual vice taxes. When you buy a car there's a huge tax. Take the base price of the car, say €15,000 add Vehicle registration tax (VRT) possibly another 30%. Now the car costs €20,000 approx. They then take that price and charge 21%VAT on top of it all including the VRT. I still can't figure out how this hasn't been challenged in court. Taxing the tax that is.
In general it is a socialist type of government. High taxes, big social welfare system, politicians on the take, the PAYE earner pays most of the taxes while the business owners tend to cheat with hardly a worry of being caught.
There's a suicide epidemic especially young men age 19-27 but it's all hush hush. Everyone here knows someone or someone's friend that has take their own life.
There's definitely a strong left wing media presence (news paper and TV) and an anti-american, anti-bush sentiment but this is common in most EU countries.

I'm from the UK and most people view Ireland from across the Irish Sea. Ireland has changed greatly in the last 40 years. It's now quite a centre for hi-tech industry and the property prices have gone through the roof.

I am from the US and inpeticular the state of Pennsylvania. I am under the impression most americans adore Ireland. Those that are not of Irish decent pretend they are on good ole St Patricks Day. On occasion we hear about the the bad guys over there that intentionally hurt people who don't beleive as they do but this is something i think we as americans have to just stop and be greatful that we live in a place that allows freedom of religion.

I'm from Belgium. I would like to go to Ireland. I think it's a nice country. There are a lot of pubs! And this is really dynamic country (especially Dublin) with plenty of job open for foreigners! And I would like to talk to somebody who's Irish to listen to the difference with the "British" pronunciation!

Im from the UK and i imagine Ireland to be a lovely place now. Its the same in what ever part of the world that people live in or visit, some people are complete idiots but most of the people are great! I know quite a few Irish people & they are nice, fun loving, happy go lucky people.....apart from that, if an Irishman talks to me, i go weak at the knees.....because the Irish accent is the horniest, sexiest accent ever!

New York City. Well, it could become a country.
What is the general opinion of Ireland? We miss all those policemen you gave us, but you more than made up for it by all that brilliant blarney you sent to Hollywood. Way to go, as the natives say here. ( My favorite is still James Cagney )
