To myself, I believe it means that to escape; go off the road; to be drawn away; it is all very tempting, but I have responsibilities to be met.

Robert Frost, coming home, tired, after a long day, in the cold winter weather in his sleigh is talking about the longing for death that people have at times. The promises are those he has made to his family, his friends, his life's work. It is the carrying of this weight which makes life precious. Otherwise those woods are lovely, dark, and deep, and easy to lie down in.

One of Bobby Kennedy's favorite quotes.

What a temptation, for an exhausted soul, to choose to lay down the burden of all responsibilities to others.

But eventually that choice isn't ours to make. It's Time's choice - Life's choice. If you prefer, God's choice.

In the meantime...we trudge on.

No matter how tempting it may be to turn aside from your duty, you must keep on. The promises we must keep are those we have made to others, to society, and ultimately to ourselves. The woods are tempting. But they should not make us swerve from our duty. "And so we beat on, boats against the current, borne ceaselessly back into the past."

I think it has something to do with wanting to stay somewhere, but you have more important things to do. Or you're with someone when you already have a partner and are trying to keep your promise to them, like commitment. So maybe it's about resisting temptation or something like that.

I beleive that Frost is saying that even though the depths of our existance behooves the artistic individual to sell out TOTALLY to IT, we must be faithful to the 'law of the land'. And, also, and even more so, to our family committments. Our souls cry out to us to give, give, give of our artistic selves. However, this world calls for us to be true to give unto it.
