You can melt down lard or use bacon grease. When you have it in it's liquified form, put it in a small square tupperware container to use as a mold. Then pour in some mixed bird seed for wild birds. Make sure you put enough in so that there is hardly any space between the seeds and the greese. Put it in the freezer overnight to set. Then in the morning, when it has thawed a bit and you can get it out of the container, just take some medium gauge wire and wrap it aroung like ribbon on a christmas present and hang it in your yard.

You can also make different "flavors" for the birdies like stirring in a half jar of suger free preserves in with the bacon grease. I like Raspberry.

In the winter which is the only time the birds need the suet we purchase it from the butcher. You can ask in the meat department of any grocer if you don't see it out near the beef.
You don't need to do anything to it but put it in the suet cage or dispenser of your choice.
If you want to add fruit, berries nuts or seed to it, you would need to melt it down in a pot on the stove and allow it to cool slightly. Add the ingredients you wish and then pour it into foil pans. You can cool it in the fridge. Score it when solid and cut into desired size to fit dispenser. For longer keeping wrap your individual cuts well and freeze. We keep our suet in the freezer so it doesn't go bad. The prepackaged stuff they sell for the birds is overpriced and what you can get in the meat department is what they enjoy most.
