The very fact that that question is next to impossible to answer-- is what makes America unique. There really isn't an "average American." Not from what I've seen anyway, and I've lived here for my whole life. ; )

Wait... I did think of one thing that *most* have in common: a desire to be independent-- and to have their individuality respected.

I just looked at that site (www.theaverageamerican.com). It looks more stereotypes of what the "average American" is *supposed* to be... instead of what the average American actually IS. For instance, I read one part that said the average American believes the Bible literally. Well I know that ain't true, from every survey I've ever seen and everything I've ever read in a religion class. Ah well, still check it out if ya want... but I wouldn't expect much science or research in that book.

Someone recently wrote a book about this- looking for the 'average' American. Check book sites, put 'average american' in the title.

Contrary to the Marborough Man individualistic image favored abroad, what characterizes Americans is actually a search for harmony in groups, excellent ability to get along with peer groups, and compared to Europe, some reluctance to contradict someone.

This is due to the religious origins of the US, which favors such qualities. 180 years ago in the south, everybody was part of a congregation and one greeted one another with "brother" or "sister"
